ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My work focuses on social issues that I try to critique or call attention to.  I have worked with subjects ranging from body image to media rhetoric to puppy mills.  I find a topic that I am passionate about and try to get that anger or confusion out to others so they may form an opinion on something that they may have never thought about before.  In my performance art pieces, I do this while bringing my own experiences into the art to make it personal in a way my paintings usually are not.

My paintings are most often done in a pop art style inspired by Rauschenberg, Warhol and Lichtenstein and aim to catch the viewer’s eye with bright colors and graphic style images.  Much of my work experiments with a juxtaposition of happy and terrible and changes the viewer’s perception of the piece upon further inspection.  At first glance, the piece seems harmless but with a closer look, the disguised horror is uncovered acting as a metaphor for these problems’ existence in real life.

Through all mediums, I attempt to bring some sort of betterment to the world either by creating some sort of community or by creating an opportunity for dialogue of harsher topics.
